Uithuizermeeden (Gr): reformed church

Underneath its uniform Classical style, the church of Uithuizermeedenis features parts from different periods. The one-aisled nave is from the mid-13th century, the choir from the 16th. In 1705 the transept was added. The tower was built in 1717-1726 after a design by Allert Meijer, who also designed the tower of the Der Aa-kerk in the city of Groningen. It has a square lower part and an octagonal upper part with a tall wooden lantern. In the same period the western facade was rebuilt. The tower was damaged by lightning in 1896 but rebuilt without any major changes. After the tower was completed the entire church was plastered and given a Classical appearance.
